Property Rights are at Risk in Stowe, Vermont
On May 13th, 2026, the Stowe Selectboard reviewed a 2nd draft of the amended STR Ordinance.
The new proposal would restrict all future short-term rentals to properties with a Homestead Declaration.
The process is ongoing! The time to engage and provide your feedback is now. The VTSTRA vacation rental community in Stowe is large and strong. We will stand together to address this developing issue and respond to unreasonable regulations that infringe on fundamental property rights.
OUR STANCE: The right to rent belongs to everyone, not just some!
This is a serious threat to all current and future property owners in Stowe that deserves the attention of all interested parties. This ordinance presents significant consequences for local businesses, rental property owners, property managers and caretakers, HOAs, and the stability of Stowe’s long-standing tourism economy.
What the New Ordinance Would Do
Cap the number of STR “Licenses.”
Exclude all non-Homestead properties from having the right to rent short-term.
Limit resident owners to 1 or 2 STR licenses.
These Restrictions Would Likely:
Reduce property values
Make selling property much more difficult
Eliminate rental income for seasonal residents
Protect corporate interests over boutique businesses and individuals
Narrow the types of accommodation options available to visitors
Reduce visitor spend at local businesses and decrease visitor diversity
